Downsizing in 3 Easy Steps

Moving into a new home can be very exciting. You are ready for the change and a new place, but it is hard to leave a home that is full of all the memories that you have enjoyed. Downsizing can make this harder. You have to get into a smaller place and will need to go through all your current possessions and decide what is important to keep and what you can get rid of.

The good news here is that downsizing is a great opportunity to start fresh and only keep things that have significant meaning to you. This can get rid of the clutter, provide you with more room, and give you a happier life. Some of the steps that you should use to downsize your current home without a lot of sacrifices include:

Make a Plan

The better you can plan, the easier it is to do all this work. If possible, take a trip to the new home and measure out the size of the rooms and any storage areas. This will give you a good guide for how much you can take with you. This will prevent issues later on.

Do this one room at a time. Moving is a big job and there is no reason to do it all at once. If you do a little bit each day, you will have time to get it done without feeling rushed. Maybe decide which of the pieces of furniture you want to keep and what you no longer need. Start with the big stuff and move to the small. This prevents you from doing work that is not necessary. For example, you do not need to reshuffle everything on a bookshelf if you don’t plan to take that with you.

Sort Out All the Belongings

Take a serious look at all your belongings and decide if you will keep it. The first question to ask is “Will I use it?” It is pretty easy to convince yourself that you will, but be serious here. If you have not used it in over a year, it is unlikely that you will use it after moving. Get rid of any multiples that you have as well to limit how much comes with you.

If this is done well, you can get quite a bit of a “no” pile without having to give up anything you are that fond of. You can either dump the items that you are not going to keep or you can choose to donate anything that you no longer need but is still in good shape. The goal is to get as many items out of your home as possible.

Preserve the Memories

You may have a ton of pictures that are taking up room in your home, but you do not necessarily want to throw all of them out. A good option is to digitize those pictures or put them in a digital frame. This takes up a fraction of the space without having to get rid of all the pictures. Get creative with how you handle any keepsakes that you want to keep as well, such as adding to a scrapbook or digitizing those as well to save space.

Downsizing often has a negative connotation that goes with it because we do not like to get rid of our stuff. With the right tools and a good mindset, we can get rid of some of the items in our homes and get ready for a move to a smaller place without having to get rid of the things that truly matter to us.
