Stillwater, Minnesota, is one of Minnesota’s oldest towns, even older than Minneapolis. It’s a charming river town nestled on the banks of the St. Croix River, just thirty minutes east of Minneapolis-St. Paul and near the Wisconsin border. This year-round travel destination is also known as the historic birthplace of Minnesota.
History of Stillwater
The city’s history dates back to 1848 when the first territorial convention establishing Minnesota as a state was held in downtown Stillwater. In 1854, the town was incorporated as a city; during this time, it was the largest city in Minnesota.
What made Stillwater famous during this time was its bustling lumber industry. The city’s lumber mills produced thousands of rail cars made of white and Norway pines. The Stillwater Lumber Company was one of the largest lumber mills in the country, and this put the city on the map.
Thanks to this rich history, Stillwater is recognized as one of the most important historical cities in the country. The city is recognized as a Preserve America community. The city also has 21 buildings that are part of the National Historic Registry and has over 100 Landmark Sites and Heirloom Homes.
Today, Stillwater is a delightful destination popular with vacationers any time of the year, especially for destination weddings and honeymooners. The Wedding Rule website has described Stillwater as “one of the most beautiful places in America to host a wedding ceremony and reception.” It’s no wonder engaged couples flock to Stillwater to plan their weddings.
Aside from being a beautiful destination wedding location, the city has won numerous other accolades, from “One of the Coolest Towns in America to Visit” and to USA Today’s “America’s Most Picturesque Small Towns.” Stillwater is also included in USA Today’s “Best U.S. Small Town Food Scenes.”
The reasons to visit Stillwater are endless, but one of the popular reasons why Stillwater is a must-visit is because it offers visitors four beautiful and distinct seasons, each offering something different. During the summer months, you can kayak around Interstate State Park or go hiking on one of the many trails in the area. In winter, ski downhill at Afton Alps or snowshoe at Lake Elmo Park Reserve. You’ll never run out of things to experience in Stillwater.
If you’re unsure when to visit, you can also plan a trip around one of the many events in Stillwater. There’s Lumberjack Days which features Lumberjack competitions, musical performances, vendors, and a beer garden. Another fun event is the fall Harvest Fest featuring a giant pumpkin weigh-off, pumpkin regatta, a chili cook-off, and other kid’s activities. This event is held on the second weekend of October every year. These are examples of some fun and interesting events and activities Stillwater offers its residents and visitors.
Whatever the season, Stillwater remains welcoming and scenic, with something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to shop for antiques in quaint and charming boutiques or experience staying at a bed and breakfast housed in an authentic Victorian home, Stillwater is the right destination for you.
